PMH PHARMACY

The Pharmacy Department of Pushpa Mission Hospital is integral to the institution’s mission of providing high-quality, patient-centered care. It operates with a focus on ensuring safe, effective, and rational use of medications throughout the hospital. This department plays a key role in supporting various clinical departments by ensuring the timely and accurate supply of pharmaceutical products, medication counseling, and promoting patient safety.

Medication Management & Quality Assurance:
The Pharmacy Department is committed to maintaining the highest standards of pharmaceutical care. To ensure that every medication prescribed is of the highest quality, the department follows strict protocols for quality assurance. Each medication is subjected to thorough quality checks at multiple stages — from procurement and storage to dispensing. The department partners with trusted pharmaceutical manufacturers and suppliers, and every batch of drugs is cross-verified for authenticity, potency, and quality compliance.

Supplier Audits & Vendor Relations:
The department has established a rigorous process for selecting reliable suppliers, conducting regular audits to ensure that all medicines meet national and international quality standards.

Medication Review and Risk Management:
The department continuously monitors the usage of medications for potential risks, drug interactions, and adverse reactions, providing clinical staff with real-time support and recommendations

Storage and Handling of Medications:
A critical aspect of the Pharmacy Department is the safe storage and handling of medications. The department has a dedicated storage facility that adheres to strict regulatory guidelines. It uses modern technology to monitor the storage conditions and prevent any discrepancies that may affect the drugs’ quality.

    • Storage Units:
The storage areas are designed to keep different types of medications at the appropriate temperatures and conditions. The pharmacy is divided into sections for non-temperature-sensitive drugs, controlled substances, and temperature-sensitive medications (such as biologics, vaccines, and insulin).
    • Cooling Units:
Temperature-sensitive drugs are stored in highly advanced refrigeration units. These units are equipped with automated temperature monitoring systems, which continuously track and record the temperature to ensure they remain within the prescribed range. Alerts are triggered if any temperature deviation occurs, ensuring immediate corrective action.
    • Safety and Compliance:
All storage practices follow Good Storage Practices (GSP) as outlined by regulatory authorities. The department ensures that medications are not only stored under optimal conditions but also rotated regularly, so older stock is used first to avoid expired medications.

Vaccination Services:
The Pharmacy Department is at the forefront of managing the hospital’s vaccination program, playing a vital role in public health efforts. Vaccines, which are particularly sensitive to environmental factors like temperature, are handled with the utmost care to ensure they retain their efficacy.

    • Vaccine Storage and Handling:
The vaccines are stored in dedicated cold-chain facilities that are constantly monitored. Regular audits ensure that these vaccines are stored at the right temperature and are used within their shelf life.
    • Patient Education and Counseling:
The pharmacy team educates patients about the importance of vaccinations, proper schedules, and potential side effects. Pharmacists ensure that all necessary information is conveyed, making patients feel confident in the safety and effectiveness of their vaccination.

Dispensing and Medication Distribution:
The Pharmacy Department ensures that patients receive their prescribed medications promptly and safely. A well-established distribution network is maintained to ensure that drugs are delivered to patient wards, outpatient departments, and other hospital areas as per the prescription.

    • Efficient Medication Dispensing:
Pharmacists dispense medications with accuracy, following each prescription’s details meticulously to avoid errors. The department uses a barcode scanning system to verify that the correct medications are dispensed to the right patients, and computerized systems are used to track medications from order to delivery.
    • Compounding and Special Orders:
The pharmacy is equipped to handle special pharmaceutical preparations, including compounded medications for patients with unique needs. These preparations are made under strict sterile conditions, ensuring the safety and efficacy of the treatments.

Clinical Services and Medication Therapy Management (MTM):
In addition to dispensing medications, the Pharmacy Department is involved in patient care through medication therapy management. Pharmacists work directly with physicians and other healthcare professionals to monitor and optimize patient treatment plans, ensuring that drug therapies are appropriate, effective, and safe.

    • Drug Interaction Monitoring:
The pharmacy team actively monitors drug interactions to prevent potential risks. They work closely with physicians to adjust dosages or choose alternative treatments based on patient needs.
    • Patient Consultations:
Pharmacists offer medication counseling, discussing possible side effects, proper administration methods, and answering any patient questions to ensure adherence to prescribed treatments. This personalized attention helps reduce medication errors and promotes positive health outcomes.

Inventory Control and Procurement:
The Pharmacy Department uses an advanced computerized inventory management system to track medication usage, expiry dates, and stock levels. This system helps prevent shortages and overstocking and ensures that the pharmacy has adequate supplies at all times.

    • Procurement & Stock Management:
The department’s procurement system is tightly controlled, ensuring that medicines are ordered from reputable sources in a timely manner. Inventory management practices are also aligned with seasonal demands, ensuring the department is always prepared for periods of increased medication usage (such as during flu season).
    • Expiry Management:
Regular stock checks are conducted to monitor expiry dates, and any medications nearing expiration are properly disposed of or redistributed according to hospital protocols.
